IATF 16949 is the automotive specific quality management standard as defined by the International Automotive Task Force. This consists of all the major automotive manufacturers. This is based on ISO 9001 and has extra requirements for those suppliers and manufacturers in the automotive sector. This standard supersedes the old technical standard ISO/TS 16949.
For those companies who want to make the transition from the old ISO/TS standard there are 2 important aspects that you need to consider:
- The deadline for transitioning to this new standard is 14 September 2018
- There are changes to the ISO 9001 standard and changes in the IATF guidelines which will have to be considered as part of the transition.
Our recommended approach is to have a root and branch review of your QMS and then perform a gap analysis against the new combined ISO and IATF guidelines. Following this prepare an implementation plan well in advance of your transition Audit.
